Assistive Technology for Students with Sensory Needs
Face to Face Communicator Deaf-Blind Solution
The FaceToFace Communicator Deaf-Blind Solution works with the Pac Mate Omni (pictured below) to allow a person who is deaf-blind to talk with a sighted person. The person who is sighted can use a regular laptop to communicate wirelessly with the person who is Deaf-Blind via the Pac Mate Omni. As shown on the picture, the individual who is Deaf-Blind can use the Perkins-style Braille keyboard to create messages that can be converted to text and sent to the communicative partner's laptop.
Assistive technology tools such as the FaceToFace Communicator allows students who are deaf-blind to communicate with others directly without the need for a specialized Sign language translator. Such a tool allows the student to access verbal instruction.

iCommunicator
iCommunicator translates speech to both text and Sign. It can be used by students who are Deaf to better comprehend what a non-Signing teacher/communicative partner is saying. Additionally, by combining text and Sign, the student is more able to attach meaning to the text.
Such software opens up direct communication between hearing individuals and a student who is Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing, without the need for the constant presence for an ASL interpreter. Literacy skills are reinforced and the student has more access to verbal explanations/instruction. |
